NeuralTask vs Todoist
These two apps are often put side by side, but they solve different halves of the same problem. Todoist is where tasks go. NeuralTask is what decides which tasks exist, how big they are and when you will actually do them.
The honest summary
Todoist is a better task manager than NeuralTask will ever be. It is mature, cross-platform, fast, works on every device you own, and its natural-language input and project hierarchy are excellent. If your work is already clear in your head and you need a reliable place to store and track it, Todoist is the right tool and there is no reason to switch.
NeuralTask targets a different failure. Most people do not fail because they lack a list — they fail because the list is a pile of intentions with no time attached. NeuralTask takes the intention, builds the plan for you, and then puts each piece into a window that is genuinely free in your Apple Calendar. It is a scheduler with an AI planner, not a list with a calendar view.
Side by side
| Aspect | NeuralTask™ | Todoist |
|---|---|---|
| What it fundamentally is | An AI execution system that plans and schedules | A task manager you organise yourself |
| Who creates the tasks | The AI generates macro tasks, subtasks, estimates, difficulty and category from free text | You create each task and decide the project structure |
| Scheduling | Automatic: tasks are placed into real free windows found in your calendar | Manual, with calendar views and calendar integrations to see tasks in context |
| Apple Calendar & Reminders | Native two-way sync | Calendar integration available; depth varies by platform and plan |
| AI role | On-device coach that can restructure the plan and edit the calendar | AI helpers on paid plans, cloud based |
| Works offline with AI | Yes — the model runs on the device | No — task list works offline, AI features do not |
| Platforms | iPhone and iPad only (iOS 26+) | iOS, Android, web, desktop, watch — the better choice for cross-platform |
| Collaboration and shared projects | Personal productivity, not built for teams | Strong team features, shared workspaces |
| Cost model | Free to download, no subscription of any kind; optional NeuralCoin packs | Free tier plus paid Pro and Business subscriptions |
| Best for | People who know what they want but never get to it | People who already plan well and need a fast, reliable system |
Where Todoist is the better answer
- You need Android, web or desktop. NeuralTask is deliberately iOS only.
- You work with other people. Shared projects and assignments are a first-class part of Todoist.
- You already have a system. If your weekly review works and your projects are under control, adding an AI planner on top would just be another tool to maintain.
- You want pure speed of capture. Getting something into a list in three seconds is what Todoist was designed for, and it shows.
Where NeuralTask is the better answer
- Your list is long and your days are full. When everything is "important", the missing layer is deciding what fits and when — which is exactly what the app computes for you.
- You plan, then reality changes. A meeting appears, a task takes twice as long, you wake up tired. The plan is rebuilt instead of abandoned.
- You want privacy without giving up AI. On-device inference means the AI works offline and your tasks stay on the phone.
- You do not want another subscription. No recurring charge, and no sign-up wall before your first project.
Which should you pick?
Choose Todoist if your bottleneck is capture, organisation or cross-platform reach. Choose NeuralTask if your bottleneck is starting, finishing and re-planning — and you live on iPhone. Plenty of people do not need to choose: reference and backlog lists can stay where they are while the execution layer moves into the calendar.
Common questions
Is NeuralTask a Todoist alternative?
Partly. Todoist is a task manager; NeuralTask generates and schedules the plan. If your problem is storing tasks, Todoist is excellent. If your problem is deciding what to do and when, NeuralTask addresses that layer.
Can I use them together?
Not natively — NeuralTask syncs with Apple Calendar and Apple Reminders, not with Todoist. A practical split is long-lived reference lists in Todoist, execution in NeuralTask.
Which one is cheaper?
Todoist has a free tier plus paid Pro and Business subscriptions. NeuralTask is free to download with no subscription of any kind; optional NeuralCoin packs exist but are never required.
Does Todoist schedule tasks automatically?
It offers calendar views and calendar integrations so you can see and move tasks in a calendar context, but it does not decide which free window a task should occupy. NeuralTask does that from your Apple Calendar.
Does NeuralTask work on Android?
No. NeuralTask is iOS only, iPhone and iPad, iOS 26.0 or later. Todoist is the better choice if you need cross-platform coverage.
